PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

of the 2nd Exploratory Workshop:

Internationalisation of Higher Education: Challenges and Rewards

Alba Iulia, 26 - 28 March, 2015

Workshop aims:

- Setting up a Network of European Universities’ Centres for International Relations;

- Finding better ways to manage institutional processes and communication in relation to internationalisation;

- Enhancing the communication component of the internationalisation strategy through promoting mobility programs, university programs, facilities, opportunities and internationalisation aspects;

- Analysing the institutional means through which universities can embed in their internationalisation strategies the recommendations of the European Commission regarding international student and staff mobility; the internationalisation and improvement of curricula and digital learning; and strategic cooperation, partnerships and capacity building.

Rationale:

Internationalisation of higher education is one of the major aims of educational policies worldwide. In a smart and knowledge-based society, universities and educational actors and policy makers seek to achieve a global interconnected network of synergetic systems. Within this context, internationalised universities can help students achieve their goals to obtain a quality education and pursue research. It provides students with an opportunity for “real world, real time” experiential learning in areas that cannot simply be taught in a classroom setting. Likewise, institutions may gain a worldwide reputation, as well as a foothold in the international higher education community, and rise to meet the challenges associated with globalisation.

Higher education institutions engage in internationalisation for a variety of reasons, and generally several different drivers are concurrently at work:

-        To prepare students for ‘global citizenship’;

-        To prepare students for the global workforce;

-        To enhance the quality of teaching and research;

-        To strengthen institutional capacity;

-        To enhance prestige and visibility;

-        To generate revenue;

-        To contribute to local or regional economic development;

-        To contribute to knowledge production on global issues;

-        To solve global problems;

-        To increase international understanding and promote peace.

It is therefore necessary to ensure institutional ownership of the internationalisation strategies developed by HEIs, to mainstream these at the level of the institution, by involving all the stakeholders (i.e. students, teaching and research staff, administrative staff within the institution, as well as institutional partners and collaborators).
