PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Conference on Linguistic and Intercultural Education – CLIE-2021:

Alba Iulia, 17 - 18 December, 2021

Conference aims and scope:

Affiliated with 1 Decembrie 1918 University of Alba Iulia, Romania, situated in Central Europe, at the crossroads between Romance, Slavic, German and Hungarian cultures and languages, the CIEL Centre has been long activating in the field of language education, intercultural awareness-raising and active citizenship promotion. Its members, academics, practitioners and researchers alike, understand linguistic and intercultural education as paramount to constructing a global citizenship of culturally competent and aware individuals who display cultural insights and a sense of belonging to the humanity at large.

CLIE-2021 aims at investigating the far-reaching implications of moving instruction and research in the online medium. In particular, public discourses that tend to politicise online learning, possibly attaching to it a stigma of being lower quality than face-to-face learning might prove disturbing and demotivating for the main actors in education and research. Indeed, technical or administrative hurdles have impeded a swift transition to fully remote teaching, learning and research (ensuring the shift to synchronous video – Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet), the implementation of adequate measures for equitable access (reliable computers and broadband, support for students with disabilities, academic integrity assurance), foresight in terms of post-pandemic eLearning infrastructure. This year’s forum will address hands-on experiences and bring forth possible solutions.

The conference will host a section dedicated to doctoral students and junior researchers.

Conference topics:

-        Foreign/Second Language Teaching and Teacher Education;

-        Second Language Acquisition;

-        Intercultural pragmatics and Cultural linguistics;

-        Discourse Analysis, Rhetoric and Pragmatics;

-        Semantics and Stylistics;

-        Corpus and Computational linguistics;

-        Sociolinguistics;

-        Contrastive Linguistics;

-        Translating, Interpreting and Mediation;

-        Intercultural Business Communication.

Conference venue:

University of Alba Iulia, Romania (online platform: Microsoft Teams)

This year too, participation in the conference will be online, therefore it incurs no costs, as all materials will be electronic. However, the organisers will charge a publication and postage fee, which will be paid after the conference, only by the authors whose papers have been selected for publication.

Doctoral students and junior researchers can apply for a fee waiver.

Publication and postage fee 50 Euro (for foreign participants).

                                                 – 100 lei (for Romanian participants).
